Zhu Zhu Pets, pronounced "zoo zoo," are cuddly battery-operated hamsters that scoot around making cooing noises -- although the larger models marketed to boys are less cuddly and more war-like. Zhu Zhu Pets were the "must have" toy for the 2009 holiday shopping season, with demand far outstripping the original supply, and at times they sold for as much as four times their suggested retail price. The maker, Cepia LLC, has increased its production capacity, adding many new characters and models. Zhu Zhu Pets are no longer scarce, and tend to sell for their suggested retail price or less. However, some characters or accessories can be harder to find than others.
Typical costs: | - Zhu Zhu Pets sell for $8-$15 each, depending on the model/character. Five distinct models/characters (varying by coloring and behavior) were introduced in 2009, and the company now lists 20 separate hamster bios[1] . The cost per hamster goes down when they're bought in a two-pack, three-pack or four-pack. For example, Walmart[2] sells a single Zhu Zhu Pet for $8.54-$9.54; a two-pack of second-generation Zhu Zhu Pets for $15-$16; and a four-pack for around $30.
- Accessories are an important aspect of playing with Zhu Zhu Pets; a separate (no hamster included) starter house with mini-ball sells for $18-$25; with a hamster included this starter kit costs about $35. A few of the many accessories include a sports car (around $10), hamster wheel and tunnel (about $15) or airport and airplane (around $20), and there are many other options. There are also non-electronic Zhu Zhu Babies which have no hair or wheels but will roll on a metallic ball when nudged by their "parent" hamster. Kits combining several accessories with a hamster or hamsters can cost $30-$120+, depending on what's included. For example, Amazon sells a set with four hamsters, fun house, slide and ramp for $115.
- Kung Zhu ninja warrior hamsters with a military and martial arts emphasis sell for $8-$9 each. There's a story with the Kung Zhu series: these start as ordinary hamsters, go through training, receive armor and then do battle for Hamster City. Armor is sold separately, for $8-$15, depending on the model. There's also a wide range of accessories, like the HQ Base ($20-$30) or giant battle arena ($30-$42). For example, Target[3] sells a four-pack of Kung Zhu hamsters for $36, four sets of armor for $30 and a battle arena for $30.

What should be included: | - These motorized, electronic hamsters require batteries, which typically are included (but not always, so be sure to check).
- The hamsters are activated by pushing spots on their back, head or nose, and can be cleaned with a damp cloth. They are not recommended for children younger than 3 years old.
